Des Moines, Iowa (Dec. 26, 2016) – The Iowa Energy announced today that the team has acquired former UNI guard Wes Washpun. Washpun had appeared in 15 games for MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, Germany before signing with the Energy.
A Cedar Rapids, Iowa native, Washpun spent a year at the University of Tennessee before transferring to the University of Northern Iowa.
Washpun was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, where he averaged 16.3 points on 51.4 % shooting from the floor. Fans may best remember Washpun for his game-winning buzzer-beater shot to beat Evansville in the MVC Tournament title game.
Washpun led the Panthers during a memorable NCAA Tournament run last season, where they upset No. 6 seed Texas on a halfcourt shot from Paul Jesperson at the buzzer before losing to Texas A&M in the second round.
Washpun ranks fourth on UNI’s All-Time assist leader board and scored 1,035 points during his three-year career with the Panthers. His 190 assists tallied during his senior season is a UNI single-season record.
Washpun averaged 5.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists during his 15-game stint with MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg prior to signing with the Energy.
The guard is expected to be in uniform tomorrow night for the Energy’s nationally televised game against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN News.
